 What is Work Permit Visa ?

The 457 visa allows successful applicants to be employed by a Sponsoring Australian company for up to 4 years.

In order to successfully apply for this visa you must first be nominated by a participating Australian employer who has a Standard Business Sponsorship (SBS) scheme with the department. If this is the case they may chose to nominate you for a position of employment and visa under the 457 visa program. If the nomination is successful then the individual can progress to a visa application.

Individual applicant must also be able to demonstrate: skills, qualifications, registrations and experience required for the role, sufficient English language ability, have private health insurance and meet Australian health and character requirements.

In general terms the visa would be applied for from outside Australia unless the applicant is in a visa category that allows switching in country.

Employers under the 457 visa program are the subject of growing scrutiny and strict compliance rules, not least of all the requirement to meet industry specific minimum salary levels as required by the Australian government.
