From April 2011, the government will introduce an annual limit on applications for Tier 1 (General) of the points-based system. An interim limit will be introduced from 19 July 2010 until the long-term limit is introduced in April 2011. Until the interim limit is implemented on 19 July 2010, applications will continue to be assessed as normal. The Investor , Entrepreneur and Post-study work categories of Tier 1 will not be included in the interim limit. In-country extensions under Tier 1 (General) will also be excluded. UK to cut number of skilled workers from outside EU

Teresa May announced today that the number of non-EU migrants allowed into the UK will be cut. It is expected numbers will go down to 24,100 between now and April 2011. This represents a 5% cut on last year’s figures. The cap will only apply to highly skilled migrants and skilled workers in certain categories of job. Compulsory English language tests will be introduced for non-European migrants applying to come to the UK to join or marry their settled partner, the UK government announced today. The government plans for identity cards for British citizens to be scrapped within 100 days, it was announced today. On 7 April 2010, the UK Border Agency made important changes to the ESOL provisions within the 'knowledge of language and life' requirement for people seeking settlement in the UK.
